Description
Theropoda>Coelophysidae>Coelophysinae>Coelophysis>C.bauri
Cope, 1887
Time: Late Rhaetian (~203 million years ago)
Length: 2 meters (6.6ft) on average; maximum length of 2.83 meters (9.2ft).
Height: ~0.55 meters (1.8ft) at the hip, with a maximum height of 0.8 meters (2.7ft).
Weight: Between 20 up to 56 kg (44-125 lbs) on the largest specimens.
Habitat: The Chinle Formation of southwestern US, North America.
Ecology and hunting habits: Small terrestrial carnivore. Analysis of its sclerotic rings suggests that Coelophysis was equipped with daylight vision similar to that of modern-day birds of prey, and relatively poor night vision. Like its counterparts, it most likely was a small game hunter efficient at spotting and catching hidden prey in the undergrowth.
Diet: Juveniles of aetosaurs such as Desmatosuchus and Rioarribasuchus, amphibians such as Koskinonodon and Apachesaurus, and the WTF-inducing archosauriform Vanclavea.
Social behavior: While the hundreds of Coelophysis found at Ghost Ranch do not indicate that they lived in flocks, they do suggest that the animals gathered in large numbers for some event; suggestions include the last remaining lake on a dry season or a spawning run of fish.
Competition: Other basal theropods such as Daemonosaurus and Chindesaurus, the dubious dinosauriform Eucoelophysis, juvenile rauisuchians.
