Description

Crocodylomorpha>Neosuchia>Eusuchia>Crocodilia>Brevirostres>Alligatoroidea>Deinosuchus>D.rugosus
Emmons, 1858
Time: Late Campanian (80-73 million years ago)
Length: Up to 7.9 meters (25.9ft) based on the largest known specimen.
Weight: Up to 2.3 tonnes based on the largest known specimen.
Habitat: Shores of the Western Interior Seaway, around the Gulf Coastal Plain, U.S. The region would have resembled estuaries and brackish-water bays: www.chesapeakebay.net/images/f…

Ecology and hunting habits: Medium-large amphibious predator. Like modern alligators, D.rugosus would have been an opportunistic predator, consuming whichever prey it could catch (the specialised saurian-eater seen in most depictions of the creature actually represents D.riograndensis). A study done in 2014 suggests that it would have been able to perform a death roll to dismember larger prey, much like it's modern relatives.
Diet: Marine and side-necked turtles, large fish and smaller dinosaurs for D.rugosus. D.riograndensis could well have brought down grown hadrosaurs or tyreophorans at the water's edge.
Growth: As opposed to the usually fast-paced, short-lived dinosaurs, larger Deinosuchus have been estimated to take up to 35 years to reach adult size, and lived for over 50 years, a limit similar to the maximum lifespans of the oldest Holocene crocodiles.
Competition: Most likely contemporary large theropods such as Appalachiosaurus and Dryptosaurus, in an African lion/Nile crocodile-esque scenario.

Update 07/15/17:
-Lineart completely remade.
-Replaced human scale figure.
-More accurate size estimate, now along the centra as is the norm, instead of in a straight line.
-Minor text corrections.
